Better regulation for stronger implementation

A view from practitioners

Chief Sustainability Officers’ actionable recommendations for a workable Omnibus to support corporate sustainability .

For so many CSOs, 2025 has, so far, been dominated by questions like ‘what on earth are we going to do about CSRD?’.

The launch of the Omnibus I and II packages in March provided both relief but also a fresh sense of confusion among practitioners. Principally, the challenge they are balancing is meeting this increasingly onerous and complex set of EU regulatory requirements and retaining focus on the actual implementation of strategic sustainability priorities within their businesses. The Omnibus proposals go some way to addressing this challenge - across the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD), the Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive (CSDDD) and the EU Taxonomy – but some suggest not far enough.

As the knowledge partner to the European CSO Network – powered by CSR Europe - SB+CO has had the pleasure of working with an exceptional group of practitioners to develop a position paper on proposed changes to these key pieces of EU Sustainability Regulation.

The paper reflects the collective voice of senior sustainability leaders across Europe and puts forward actionable recommendations to improve the design, coherence, and implementation of EU sustainability regulation. Based on in-depth consultations, it offers a pragmatic view of what is working—and what is not—on the ground.
