Meeting California’s climate-risk law: what’s good enough and what’s worth the effort?

Join our virtual session on Thursday 7th August:

Time: 16:00 – 17:00 BST / 11:00 – 12:00 EDT / 10:00 - 11:00 CDT / 08:00 - 09:00 PDT

With California SB 261 climate regulation coming into effect from as early as 2026, and more state level climate-risk disclosure laws on the horizon,  many US business are quietly asking the same thing:

What’s good enough and what’s worth the effort?

We’re hosting a 1 hour virtual session to explore what Year 1, and beyond, of meeting the California SB 261 regulation could look like. We’ll be sharing our insights, drawing on years of experience supporting businesses in aligning to climate risk regulation in other markets. And we’ll be hearing from businesses who have been putting this into practice for some time.

What you can expect from the session

Hear views from SB+CO and a range of businesses with experience in climate-risk reporting, including:

  • What’s coming, and how it compares to what’s already familiar. An overview of new U.S. state-level rules (including California’s SB 261 and where there are additional proposals), and how they compare to more established frameworks like TCFD, already in use globally.

  • What preparation looks like in practice. A practical breakdown of where effort is typically required: Governance, Strategy, Risk Management, and Metrics & Targets and what other businesses have done to align, without over-engineering it.

  • Where to focus any extra effort (at least initially). Lessons learned from Climate Scenario Analysis: what works, and how to avoid common missteps.

  • Connecting this to your bigger picture. What Senior Leadership need to know and how to position this work as supporting - not distracting from - your broader sustainability strategy.
