Why EmpCo is such good news for sustainability communcations

Don’t let regulation be the enemy of winning consumer-facing sustainability communications

The Empowering Consumers For the Green Transition (ECGT) Directive, also known as EmpCo, is now in force. The Directive bans businesses from using vague, unsubstantiated, or misleading sustainability claims in their consumer-facing communications when selling into the European Union, bringing widespread impact for websites, brand marketing, and product packaging.

With the EU’s most significant anti-greenwashing regulation to date setting clear boundaries on what companies can and cannot say when communicating sustainability credentials to consumers, some question whether it could lead to corporate greenhushing. It doesn't need to – EmpCo was designed to reinforce integrity rather than discourage ambition. Find a short overview and common questions we have been advising on below.

Whether you are looking for support in developing robust sustainability communications or in upskilling your internal teams, we can help you lean into the process to enhance consumer trust.
